National Endowment for the Humanities Grant News

The National Endowment for the Humanities kicked off National Arts and Humanities Month by announcing the recipients of the Sustaining the Humanities through the American Rescue Plan today, and I am so excited to share that I've been brought in as a consultant on the Indiana Medical History Museum's project!
I am deeply honored to be participating in the Central State Hospital Memory Archive humanities project, which will uncover and elevate stories of marginalized and erased voices. With the generous support of the NEH, I'm looking forward to building an understanding of the patient experience - accounting for race, class, and gender - through the lens of personal accounts and architectural history. Thank you to the NEH for recognizing this unique institution with a complex, layered history and for supporting work centered on mental health. We are experiencing a collective mental health crisis exacerbated by the pandemic; now is the time to consider our connections to medical history.
The IMHM is 1 of 6 Indiana institutions - and only 1 of 3 Indianapolis institutions - to receive this prestigious and competitive grant. Read the IMHM's press release here.
IMHM is asking people with various connections to the hospital - former patients or staff for example - who are interested in being interviewed or sharing their stories, memories, photographs, etc. to contact us at voices [at] imhm.org or call 317-635-7329.
